Liverpool’s pursuit of Florian Wirtz will see them break the record fee paid for a German player.
Earlier today The Athletic revealed that the German international now prefers a move to Anfield over the German champions.
The Reds became linked with a move for the 22-year-old this month after surprising reports that he had travelled to Liverpool alongside his parents.
Manchester City were initially thought to be among the only Premier League club with concrete interest in the Bayer Leverkusen man.
However, Liverpool were said to have hosted him and his representatives ahead of a potential move to Anfield this summer.
Within days, the Reds’ interest in the 22-year-old has escalated and he now looks set to make a swtich to Anfield in the summer.
On Friday, BILD reporter Christian Falk, even reported that Wirtz has been “house hunting” in the city of Liverpool, ahead of his move.
Several reports also on Friday indicated that the 22-year-old has agreed to a move to Liverpool, with the club also currently discussing with Bayer Leverkusen over his move.
However, Wirtz’s transfer to Liverpool will not come cheap.
The Reds are said to be prepared to shatter their transfer record to meet Leverkusen’s possible valuation.
According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Arne Slot’s side will break the record fee paid for a German player to land Wirtz.
As it stands, the most expensive German player is Kai Harvertz, who was signed for £70 million in 2020.
Wirtz is set to cost more than that, with the deal reportedly expected to exceed €103 million.
“Liverpool have opened talks with Bayer Leverkusen over the signing of playmaker Florian Wirtz,” Ornstein wrote for The Athletic.
“Any move for the 22-year-old would represent a club record signing for Liverpool and would also make Wirtz the most expensive ever German player.”
